About

AI that augments attorneys,
not one that replaces them

We built CounselAI because legal AI needed to be done differently — with real oversight, real security, and real respect for the complexity of legal practice.

Our thesis

The problem with legal AI so far

Large firms spend millions building internal AI tools. Solo practitioners and mid-size firms get left behind — stuck choosing between expensive enterprise software and consumer AI tools that weren't designed for legal work.

CounselAI closes that gap. We give every firm access to specialized legal AI agents with the same rigor and oversight that a serious legal innovation team would demand — at a price that a three-person firm can justify.

“AI drafts, attorneys decide. AI flags, attorneys judge. AI suggests, attorneys act.”

How we think

Core beliefs

These aren't marketing slogans — they're design decisions built into every part of the platform.

Built for law, not adapted to it

Every agent, every workflow, every interface is designed around how attorneys actually practice — not retrofitted from a generic AI tool.

Human-in-the-loop, always

AI drafts, attorneys decide. AI flags, attorneys judge. AI suggests, attorneys act. Every high-risk output requires attorney approval before it reaches a client or court.

Security is non-negotiable

Client confidentiality is a prerequisite, not a feature. AES-256 encryption, full tenant isolation, TLS 1.3 in transit, and immutable audit logs come standard.

Honest about limitations

Our agents tell you when they're uncertain. Confidence levels, source verification status, and explicit flags for unresolved questions — not false confidence.

Design principles

How these beliefs translate into product

Conservative by design

The Conflict Check agent never declares 'no conflict' — it always requires attorney review. When in doubt, we flag it.

Your data stays yours

We don't train on your documents or client data. Full tenant isolation means your firm's work is never mixed with another's.

Designed with practitioners

Built with input from practicing attorneys who use it daily. The agents reflect real workflows, not idealized ones.

Incremental adoption

Start with one agent. Add more as you build confidence. CounselAI fits into your workflow, not the other way around.

The approach

Common questions

Why not just use ChatGPT?

General-purpose models aren't conservative about legal risk. They produce confident-sounding answers with no source verification, no confidence levels, and no flags for what they don't know. CounselAI agents are purpose-built to be explicit about uncertainty — especially in high-stakes outputs like conflict checks and legal research.

What does 'human-in-the-loop' actually mean here?

Every agent output categorized as high-risk enters a review queue before it can be used. Attorneys approve, reject, or edit. Nothing goes to a client, a court, or an opposing party without that step. The AI accelerates your workflow — it doesn't bypass your judgment.

Why focus on smaller and mid-size firms?

Large firms have the resources to build custom tools. Everyone else is underserved. A solo practitioner managing 80 active matters has the same deadline risk as a BigLaw associate — but without a team of paralegals and a knowledge management department. CounselAI levels that playing field.
